Little Wise is destined for big things. Sophie Klein sings with the wisdom of an old soul
— Nkechi Anele, Triple J

Little Wise is the moniker of Melbourne Folk-Roots and Alt-Country songwriter Sophie Klein. True to her name, this songbird is small in stature, yet shares her wisdom with adoring audiences through masterful storytelling and soul-baring lyrics.

She first picked up a guitar at the age of thirteen and, inspired by independent performers like The Waifs and Ani Difranco, began writing and performing her original songs with a dream of travelling across Australia in a tour van. In 2013 she made it happen, and continues to live the dream as she journeys across the country, building a grass roots fan-base through her honest lyrics and her homage to the great musical road trippers before her.

Silver Birch, the debut full-length album from Little Wise, was released in November 2016 and has been heralded as “sweetly emotive and unmistakably thoughtful” (Happy Magazine). This collection of exquisitely crafted songs explores Klein’s story in a deeply personal and honest way, telling of grief, relationships and self-discovery. Her conversational lyrics are reminiscent of classic country, emanating a respect and longing for the past, while a delicate blend of classic drumming and smooth atmospheric electric guitar reflect her own unique spin on the music that shaped her.

The album was featured in the ‘Top 10 Albums Of The Week’ on Melbourne’s community radio stations PBS and RRR, charting in the AMRAP Community Radio Metro Charts, winning ‘Best Debut Release’ in the Rhythms Magazine Writers’ Poll and receiving national airplay on Triple J, ABC Radio National and Double J.

Recorded partly in Klein’s childhood home before it was handed over to new owners, the album radiates a nostalgic longing for the past as it reflects on the heartbreaking loss of her mother to cancer in 2013. It takes its name from the Silver Birch trees in her front yard, which represent the cycles of life as their leaves change with the seasons. Klein collaborated with production team MEJU (Megan Bernard and Kalju Tonuma (Neil Finn, Crowded House, Hunters and Collectors) on the record which features special guest performances by Sal Kimber, Ben Franz (The Waifs), Rosie Burgess, Sam Lohs (Fruit) and other renowned players of the flourishing Melbourne folk scene.

Little Wise has previously released two independent EPs– Moments of Clarity (2012) and Sweet Rain Falling (2014).

Little Wise travels on to the rolling rhythm of her music, against a backdrop of storied landscapes, national tour dates and launch shows at Melbourne’s iconic music venues The Northcote Social Club and Bella Union. She has been billed alongside some of Australia’s finest musicians at festivals around the country including Yackandandah, Candelo Village and St Kilda Festival and has cemented her place in Australia’s thriving folk scene, performing in pubs, halls, living rooms, churches and even Laundromats.

A stunning, raw take on rootsy folk and alternative country. The evocative songbird is on the rise.
