“I am an old soul, but I have young bones,” sings Little Wise on ‘Silver Birch’, the title track off her 2016 debut record. Little Wise, AKA Melbournian songwriter Sophie Klein, is a truth-teller whose words and music leave you feeling more alive and heart-achingly human than ever before. Whether she’s slinging her electric guitar in a rollicking Roots-Rock number, or quietly strumming a wistful acoustic folk refrain, Little Wise will break your heart and stitch it back together again - melodically, piece by piece. Her sound fuses classic Americana and Folk-Roots with a good dose of Melbourne swagger.
The album ‘Silver Birch’ is a “collection of carefully-assembled songs with profound stories” (Listening Through the Lens). It was featured on PBS and RRR, won ‘Best Debut Release’ in the Rhythms Magazine Writers’ Poll and received national airplay on Triple J, ABC Radio National and Double J. For the album, Little Wise collaborated with production team ‘MEJU’, comprising Megan Bernard and Kalju Tonuma (Neil Finn, Hunters and Collectors). Recorded partly in Klein’s childhood home before it was handed over to new owners, the album radiates a nostalgic longing for the past. Fans have expressed deep resonance with the work, as the letters of love have poured in. The album follows Little Wise’s previous independent EPs– ‘Moments of Clarity’ (2012) and ‘Sweet Rain Falling’ (2014).
